Hi All,

I was finally able to take my Touring L for a longer road trip yesterday. Starting out with 600 miles on it, I did a 235 mile round trip and was able to get 26.5 mpg. 20% city and 80% highway. One of the things I noticed on the my way to my destination, I notice that the transmission was holding mostly in 7th gear even going 75mph. There was a section 50 mile section for the freeway that was mostly flat with a occasional hill as the road went over an overpass. The transmission finally shifted into 8th gear after going over one of these sections. It would shift down into 7th again at the next one overpass then shift up to 8th as it went down the other side.

After several of these overpass crossings it seemed as if the transmission started to stay in 8th gear more frequently. My speeds varied from 70-75mph. On the way back home, the transmission seemed like it was shifting into 8th gear more frequently then on the way out to the destination. I have read that the ZF948TE is a self learning transmission? I found article talks about this. In the article it says" A service bulletin advises technicians in certain cases to perform an "adaptation drive learn" taking the Cherokee out for a test drive of up to 78 minutes to ensure that it is shifting correctly."

Does anybody know if this is true? Is so, is it possible for it to learn and unlearn different driving styles?

The link to the article is here: http://tinyurl.com/k7zcjzh

Thanks,
Ed

Yes, it's true. The transmission in my Cherokee was just replaced, and it's now going through the adaptive learning process again. Depending on how many miles are on your Pacifica, it still may be learning the way you drive.

Have about 800 miles on now. How long does it take? and can it unlearn some bad habits?

Not sure exactly how it works. But I would think that if it can learn, it should be able to unlearn as well.

I think it is more possible that with the driver is self learning, or there was a slight incline or nose wind. It seems that this tranny is very sensitive to change.

Or, it is allowing for a break in period and being Uber sensitive as to avoid damaging gears as what appears to be occurring in the first gen zf tranny in a fca product.

All plausible because I see no research that supports or denies any of this, including self learning tranny.

How would one know what gear it is in? 7th or 8th? What would tell me that?
Thanks, John
