The other day after I parked and turned off my Pacifica Touring in the driveway, a message popped up across the instrument cluster saying SERVICE SHIFTER! Anyone else dealt with this message before? I immediately called the dealership we use for servicing our van and they told me they would need to hook up to their computer to see if a code was stored in order to tell me why it happened. That was late Friday afternoon and I haven't noticed the message again. Could be a fluke, but our Pacifica has been in the dealership shop 4 times since purchasing with many issues from the get go...

Hey Jtravis410,

I'm really sorry to hear you've had multiple trips to the dealership already! With the shifter light, it's possible a code was stored, although multiple ignition cycles may get rid of it. If you have time to stop by the dealership to have them check, please do--and let me know if you need any follow up!

We have gotten the same message multiple times. The dealership has had our Pacifica now for 2 days. I hope I get the vehicle back today! I wonder if this is an early indication of an issue that will require a recall?

I would suggest purchasing an OBD2 reader. They're relatively cheap on amazon and there are free apps on your phone that can tell you what specific error it is by producing a specific error code #. Some apps (usually the paid on) will read the OBD2, produce the error code and also describe what the error code # means for you. Others require you to google the error code.

At any rate, the "issue" lights in cars for me are great since they alert you that something's wrong, but it doesn't clearly tell you what is wrong. The main reason for wanting to know would be to help you make an informed decision as to weather you should continue to drive your vehicle as if there's nothing wrong and it was just an outliar glitch or if it's an issue that requires "expert" diagnosis and repair. Also, sometimes the issue(s) can be easily resolved on your own rather quickly.

Thank-you Anna,

It seems that an electronic module has to be ordered for the shifter, and the car will be ready Monday. I have a loaner car until then.

I also ordered a spare tire. I found out from this forum that it will fit in the storage space for one of the passenger folding seats. I feel better having a spare incase of a blow-out in the middle of the night.

Thank-you for your attention!!

Our new van started Doing this after only 300 miles on the car. The dealership ordered a new shifter module and replaced it. Problem has not come back. The car now has 2000 miles on it. I'm actually at the dealership for another issue. It is a brand new car with the first model year. I know there will be some bugs to work out. All in all I am very happy with my mini van.

Today I parked and turned off my Pacifica LX in the driveway, a message popped up across the instrument cluster saying SERVICE SHIFTER! I immediately try to turn on my van but it did not start and turn on the check engine, after there tried several times the van turned on, and they told me they would need to hook up to their computer to see if the code was I have been scheduling in order to tell me why it happened, but they have only been scheduled for 06/09/18. That was today 08/13/18 and I have not noticed the message again. Could be a fluke, but our Pacifica has been in the dealership shop and stayed there for 3 days.

We've been experiencing this issue on & off for the past two weeks. I was parked in a lot that had an incline to it (5-10 degrees) and tried driving away from the spot after shifting it into drive. About 25-yards later, the parking break applied itself and "Service Shifter" came on the dash; the parking brake was never actuated by me or automatically on an incline (not sure if Pacifica does that). By this time, I was in a flat area and shifted to park. After about 8 cycles of the ignition, each time turning off the parking brake and shifting into drive, the parking brake finally stayed off.
We finally got my truck back from the GMC dealer (tranny cooler took a rock to the face), so now scheduling the Pacifica service.

Any ideas from anyone on the cause?

This was an issue very early on it our van, and one that we had to make multiple trips to get addressed (unfortunately not a rare occurrence). The dealer refused to repair as the error wasn't held in codes. We had to quickly whip out a phone and capture the occurrence on the camera for them to even discuss replacement.

Me too

I have been without my 2017 Pacifica for several days. More if you count last week. I had 5 recalls I needed to clear and turned it in for service last week. They cleared the recalls, on Wednesday, and then Sunday when I washed it, it wigged out when I tried to start and came up with the "service shifter"error. I had to have it towed to the dealership, and it still won't start there as of today (Thursday of the following week). They don't even know for sure yet if the new part will fix the problem. I have 48,000 miles on it (2 years old) and the cost to repair will be a minimum of $750, but I don't know for sure how expensive it will be in the end. Likely it will be north of $1k. According to this forum and some others, it seems this is a known issue with the vehicle, but I will footing the cost to replace parts that are 2 years old and will cross my fingers that the error doesn't return. I buy new cars every 1-3 years, and have never had such a big problem on such a young car. I suppose I will have to consider trading this in for a car from a different manufacturer, if Chrysler is going to build their business and require customers to fund their design errors on a new model vehicle.

UPDATE: Got the call today that a new computer is also needed, which is a $600 part. Which will also take 3-4 days to arrive. So the new ballpark on this repair is approaching $2,000. This is my 21st new car I've purchased and by far the most expensive repair the soonest I have been into ownership.

My Service Shifter message was fixed when I replaced the cheap OEM battery with a new one.

Can you share any details on how to do this?
Thanks
Welcome to the forum. If you put your van info (year, trim, gas/hybrid, etc.) in the signature line of the UserCP it may help others answer your questions in the future.

While this may not be the answer you were hoping for, if your van is under the 36,000 miles/36 months warranty, you can take it to the dealer and have the battery checked and possibly replaced.

Many places that sell batteries will look up what battery you require and will install it if you don't want to go to the dealer or if the warranty is expired.

Otherwise, you can search the forum about gas battery replacement and get recommendations on replacing it yourself. It seems like some members mentioned getting batteries from Costco or Home Depot.

A bad or declining battery will give all kinds of unusual messages that seem unrelated to the problem. It would be better to have the first message say, "Get Battery Checked" than all the other systems complaining that something seems to be wrong. Maybe they are working on that.

I am having the same problem with my 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. This is becoming the worst vehicle I have ever dealt with. When I first bought it I had to convince the dealership that there was something wrong with the transmission. That mess took over a year. And the other day my van was acting strange then stopped working. The error message read the shifter needed servicing. Now dealership states I have to pay to replace the battery to figure out what is wrong. Battery was working before it was dropped off. Already see how this will go and I'm going to sell it. It's not worth the hassle anymore to convince them that something is really wrong this it.

Welcome to the forum. If you put your van info (year, trim, gas/hybrid, build date, etc.) in the signature line of the UserCP it might help others assist you if you really want help and aren't just here to vent and leave. Noting mileage might also help.

A low or bad battery can be a source of unusual messages and can cause the van to die suddenly. If the van is under 36 months/36,000 miles (which ever comes first), the battery is also under warranty, otherwise you have to pay to replace it. It might be difficult to sell with a service shifter message so you will probably need to replace the battery. If the battery isn't under warranty, you can get one elsewhere if you don't want to go to the dealer.
