Hello, all. Wanted to share a problem I had this week.
New to the forums, so I've got a 2017 Hybrid Platinum, FWIW
Started the van up, and when I tried to turn the shift knob, it was locked in place, and would not turn, van remained in Park. The center display (where the speedometer is) said "shifter service." I turned it off, opened the door, closed the door, and started it up again. Momentarily displayed the message again, but this time I was able to put it into gear. I headed straight to the dealer. Turned out to be failure of the shifter module.
They were able to locate the part at another dealer who overnighted it to my dealer, and two days later I got the van back.
It's a new, complex vehicle, I get that, so I'm not real upset... but I wanted to post in case others experience the same thing, and it becomes a trend or something.
Just sayin' Take care, and peace.

Mike

I don't put much stock in that message. I have a 2017 gas model, and last August got the same message, and in the end it was the battery that was bad (8 Mos) and had to be replaced.

To the OP:
Thanks for sharing that issue.
My dealer told me that they have had issues with vans not coming off of Park, but I didn't ask him why. I will next time I'm in there

We've seen on many threads that a bad battery can cause all sorts of symptoms. One poster was ready to dump the van before he discovered the issue was the battery. One thing does seem to be "trending" -- early battery failure -- I put in quotes because it does have to be framed in the overall performance of 200,000+ Pacificas out there. But when it happens to you......

Anyway, I did want to also share that in the early months of the van (2017 TL+,) that, after shutting the engine off, there were a few times I got the message "service shifter soon" for a few seconds after the engine stopped. It was not a message that remained in the message center, and I was never in a position to have an OBD download at one of the auto stores. Dealer could not trace, but it stopped happening (after one of the TSB updates?) I would have thought that a message like that should (1) remain in the message center and (2) possibly cause the MIL to light, although it would seem to be at the "change oil soon" level of urgency.

Hi Mike,

You've got some great advice here. Just to chime in, if you decide you'd like to have this looked at by your dealership, please let us know. We'd be glad to help and get this escalated to a Case Specialist if necessary.

I had the same issue with my 2018 Pacifica. Not only did it lock in park, but when I finally got it in gear (after 30 minutes and several times turning van on and off), the parking break automatically activated while in both drive and reverse, and continued to do so during multiple attempts (over 90 minutes) to get it moving. Straight to the dealership. They say it needs the electronic shift module replaced. I would suggest that owners not ignore this...the activated parking break while in gear was very unnerving. Kept waiting for it to lock up while driving...

We are currently talking with FCA regarding this issue. It’s been in the shop 4 times because of the shifter service. Locked up once trying to leave preschool, once trying to back out of the driveway, and once after backing out of our driveway and trying to shift from reverse to drive. All 4 “fixes” were different. Not a safe situation. My wife refuses to drive the van anymore and we will follow appropriate Lemon Law steps if FCA decides not to give us our money back. Too bad cause we really liked it otherwise...except for the start/stop that also needed a battery replaced within the first year.

I am having a similar issue. We experience hard shifting at about 18,000 miles. Dealer mentioned it was probably just the computer getting used to my driving as opposed to my wife. About a month later we went on a road trip and the transmission completely went out. Took two weeks to get it back. Now within the last month we have been having the service shifter light come on and the car completely locking up on us. It has mostly happened near our home, thankfully, but we have had to leave it halfway in the road a couple of times. Luckily we live on a dead end and we don't get a lot of traffic. Needless to say we aren't confident taking it anywhere at the moment. I drove it to the dealer today to have them look at it. We've also had problems with the start/stop not functioning correctly. Today it stopped functioning on the drive to the dealer. Says that it is in Battery Protection Mode.

If you put your van info in the signature line of account settings it will show up at the bottom of your posts. Is it a hybrid?
Have the regular 12V and aux batteries been checked? What was done when the transmission was worked on?
I'm not a mechanic, but there are many forum members who might be able to offer suggestions if they have a little more info.

we have exactly the same issue, our van is currently in the shop for the 4th time for the service shifter. The auto start/stop is also not working and unavailable along with several other issues. It has been issue after issue, the van just hit 36k and they said both batteries are now bad. We have a 2018 Touring L, gas.

Unfortunately both batteries being dead is becoming not too uncommon for a Pacifica with as many miles you have. My guess is your aux battery failed first, have you noticed the ESS feature message not available for a while now? Because the batteries are connected when the vehicle is off, if your aux battery dies it will also drain your main battery. Both are AGM type batteries that do not like to be fully drained.

I hope this reason for your service shiftier issue as I have heard that it can be. It is a relatively easy fix, but at a dealer the batteries are not going to be cheap.

unfortunately they replaced both batteries, but we are still having the issue so it has to go back in for the 6th time now.
