Engine stall while moving (stop/start)

While driving at low speed, engine just stopped and accelerator pedal unresponsive. Within seconds heard the starter restart the engine. Took to Feeny Chrysler in Midland, MI for check on hard shifting and the engine stall problem. Dealer unable to find any error codes, other than low battery codes which they wrote off as a common problem, and returned the vehicle to me as a cold weather problem and operator error. The stall was of extreme concern due to being in traffic and potential for being rear-ended, so called service department manager who was apologetic and blamed on new service writer and asked for vehicle return. While waiting for transmission valve to correct hard shifting problem, vehicle returned to me to use, but again experienced what appeared to be total loss of accelerator pedal function and loss of forward motion of vehicle which corrected within seconds. This second time I did not notice whether engine had to restart or not. What is going on here? This is a vehicle safety problem and no recall.

Wow that's crazy. Our van has been back to the dealer 4 times due to the auto start/stop completely shutting down the van at intersections and we have to manually restart it, but it always restarts for us. It's happened once since we got the van back after the last trip to the dealer so we're waiting for it to happen again so we can take a video of it. If it goes back again for the same issue we can legally lemon law the van although we REALLY don't want to. I wish my wife would listen to me and just turn off the auto start/stop but she refuses. Can't say we've experienced complete loss of power while driving though. We love the van but some of them do seem to have bugs. I think that's an unavoidable chance you take when buying any new car.

We bought our 2018 Pacifica in August, so far I have counted 7 times ours has malfunctioned like yours. Perhaps I need to start making it an issue to the dealer like you have. Maybe I can get mine Lemon lawed also. I'm sick and tired of the unreliable electronics garbage. Earlier today I filed a complaint with NHTSA. My first Chrysler product and I regret it every day. I won't be buying another, that's for sure.

What's the best way to de-activate the start-stop system? I'm wondering if you can just remove the start/stop battery or let it die and not replace. I don't see any benefit to this system and don't want to buy a car that has it. Unfortunately, most do. Thanks.

I don't think you can remove the battery -- the monitoring systems will probably go nuts.

There are commercial devices that you can attach to the OBD port to kill the feature at all times, otherwise just hit the "off" button on the dashboard when you start the van. Search the threads. The consensus is to remove those aftermarket devices before the dealer services the van.

I believe it is a system to raise the fleet mpg for federal standards -- more and more vehicles are coming out with it -- and the standard is probably why there is not an option to turn it off.

Open the hood, find the hood switch (it tells the vehicle whether or not the hood is open or closed... it's right up front, I believe just to the right of the hood latch), reach underneath and unplug it. The ESS will now be deactivated (will say so in the info center in gauge cluster). You won't be able to use remote start anymore, though. There is a YouTube video that shows this, although I don't have the link for it at the moment. It's on the forums somewhere.

I had this happen to me a couple times while coming to a stop light and didn't give it much thought to put the car in park and hit the start button.

However last week with the cold weather we had this issue and it was very dangerous for us and our family. Today as I was rolling to prepare to turn left into our addition the car stopped and the Restart Require message came up while sitting idle in an unresponsive vehicle. We were very fortunate the car started after I quickly put the car in park and hit the start button.

Mine did it once, so I took it in. At the same time they performed a software update that was part of a recall. I was told that software update fixed the failure to restart issue. Hasn’t done it since.

Hi ShaunB,
We're truly sorry that you have experienced this. We suggest having your dealer address this. Please send us a private message as well if you would like any additional assistance while your Pacifica is at the dealer.

Took it to dealer yesterday and they performed software update, will let everyone know if happens again.

It should be noted that this car is only around 6 months old and 11k miles, it has been to dealer for 2-3 recalls already.

2018 Pacifica Limited (8000 miles) has been in for the stop/start three times now (starting at 5500 miles), and there is NO FIX per Chrysler!! Not only do I have pictures of this happening but, my service techs were able to replicate it AND, get this-it even happened with my Pacifica LOANER!!!! After my latest service visit I was told they NOW (they’ve always got a reason until that reason blows up in their face, and my car is back in the shop!) think it’s a problem with ABS voltage blah, blah ,blah and that I need to just drive my car around with the Start/Stop off until they come up with a solution (WTH- I live IN the city where, this feature is supposed to maximize my fuel consumption AND, a main reason why I bought this BRAND NEW $50k car!!) Now, today, the ‘Stop’Start OFF is throwing out warming lights and my turn signals go haywire and won’t shut off (it’s a miracle I’m still alive-seriously!!) To add insult to injury, I have a MONTHS old claim in with Chrysler ‘Care’, as my car rolled down an icy hill during one of my stalls and left a lovely landscaping -wall -scrape along my rear passenger bumper; damage that I believe is for Chrysler to fix!! They didn’t believe me and, had the balls to send an accident inspector out to verify my story with the van’s black box (inspector concurred that their had been no collision) but, now Chrysler Care (ie India Call Center) has taken to telling me EVERY day ‘We are so sorry we have escalated this and you will get a call back today’ but, no one EVER calls back! This is a NIGHTMARE and, I have taken to telling anyone in our community who will listen and, people reading in forums like this: ‘DO NOT BUY THE CHRYSLER PACIFICA !!!!!!!!” My ex-husband who was a Technical Fellow in Electrical Design Development for Ford took a look at this latest ‘cause’ and told me, ‘If this REALLY is the problem, you are SCREWED, because this is a faulty design flaw and CANNOT be fixed with a recall. Sadly, I think it’s going to take someone dying (or getting seriously injured) before this van gets yanked off the road by NHSI. DO NOT BUY THIS VAN!!!!!

I have a 2018 Touring L Plus. It has turned off several times while driving. The last time while on the highway. I have heard about the 2017 issues, but now realized the 2018 are affected. I'm taking it to the shop but know already they wont have an answer for me. No check engine light came on. Anyone had any success?

My Limited gasser (14,000 Miles) did it again today. Been in twice for this, last 3 months it was fine.
Today, engine died at stop sign, "ESS needs service, Shift into park, restart engine" Did that, was able to shift back into drive.
Lost the left turn arrow, which pissed off a bunch of people behind me.
ChryslerCares, Any fix for this yet?

Stop/Start and Electronic Stability Control Warning

I just got a used 2018 Chrysler Pacifica and the Stop/Start System Fault and Electronic Stability Control warning light comes on, at the same time, every time I drive it. So far the car has not stopped completely, but it sounds like it is only a matter of time. Wish I knew about the problem before I bought it and had it shipped home.

Hi everyone,
Recently there was a Technical Service Bulletin (18-001-19 REV. B) that appears to address concerns similar to the symptoms that you are having with your vehicle. To ensure this TSB applies, we would like to get you back into the dealer to have a qualified technician review the details of the TSB and specifics of your vehicle. Once reviewed, the technician can then perform the repair procedure that best matches the symptoms and diagnosis of your vehicle. Please feel free to send us a private message if you have any questions.
