Uconnect4 8.4" Software Updates v28.3 AND v40.1 AND VRM Update 2114.12

To my fellow Chrysler Pacifica Owners,

I've attached the Files for North American, US/CN Chrysler Pacifica with Uconnect 4 8.4" screen require to fully update your Audio Units to the (at this time) current Software Version 40.1 Per Chrysler TSB: 08-076-23

They are organized into separate folders For US/CN (UAV/UCV); and VRM is separate.
Currently I have only the 40.1 Update for our Canadian Friends, when I get ahold of the 28.3 file, I will upload it and update this post

UPDATE

I've now ALSO included the VRM (Video Routing Module) Software Update Per TSB 08-018-21 REV A.
Please note: It is currently unknown if this update works for Canadian vehicles. If someone tries it and is successful, please let me know so that I can update the information accordingly.

UPDATE #2

At the bottom I've attached photos showing which ports to use for each Update thanks to @ThisSuckersElectrical for taking the time to take, mark and post these photos for everyone to use as a reference.

Please Follow the Instructions carefully when creating the USB Stick per the TSB.
I will also recommend, as with ALL software programming and Updating, regardless of what module on a vehicle...

1a) Ensure your vehicle battery is properly charged BEFORE attempting the updates,
or
1b)
hook up a battery charger of at least 10A, preferably 20A to ensure battery voltage is maintained.

2) >> I << set my key position to the 'Acc' position during updates instead of the 'Run' position, this allows the audio unit and USB ports to power up, but not wasting energy on the rest of the vehicle while updating.

3) the files being provided DO NOT include any MAP specific updates, that's a problem for you to sort, do NOT link MAP specific updates here please to keep this thread clean and specific to the actual SOFTWARE Update.

4a) Perform these updates at >> YOUR OWN RISK << As with ANY software update, things CAN happen. If you follow the instructions in the TSB, and have a battery charger hooked up (preferable option) you SHOULDN'T have any issues.

4b) As far as I know, these files are for US Market Pacifica's. I do no know, nor do I guarantee that these updates work on vehicle outside of the US market.
If you try it on a NON-US Market Pacifica, do so at YOUR OWN RISK.

5) If you feel uncomfortable performing these updates, DON'T. Go to your Dealer, if they are no help, try asking Chrysler Cares for Help. They have been FANTASTIC at helping multiple owners to have audio update issues resolved.

*

6a) SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING Specifically the VRM UPDATE: If you're like me, and had REALLY old VRM Firmware (mine was 17.xx) The update will automatically run TWICE, once to get you to 19.xx, and then run again to update to 2114.12.

6b) Do not unplug your USB stick until it's fully updated, and the units return to the 'HOME' screen. At first it will say updates completed, going to sleep. (it's actually rebooting) Then you'll see the Chrysler Splash screen, after a long first load you'll get to the home screen. THEN, you can remove the USB stick. (I'd probably suggest you double check software version under the setting menu through the REAR screens to verify first)

6c) The upgrade option will pop up on both screens, and it does not matter which screen you Start the process from, But note during the update, ONLY the left (driver's screen) will show progress. Passenger screen will not come back on until FINAL reboot when the Chrysler Splash screen comes up.

7) The VRM TSB has incomplete instructions to create the USB stick, but it is the same as the Uconnect update. Extract files to the base USB drive, not in a folder, and the USB stick MUST be FAT32 File format.

8) This is a suggestion, take it as you will.. I am not a fan of unplugging live modules... that's how you brick things.
My Procedure:

a) Turn on Vehicle completely (as tsb states)
b) Remove all dvd's, usbs, chargers, etc etc.
c) After rear screens fully booted up to the 'HOME' screen, Plug in usb into USB port next to BlueRay Player (per TSB)
d) Rear screens will pop up showing update, Click upgrade (again, doesn't matter which screen), and let it do it's thing.

Update Port for UCONNECT UPDATE ONLY

Update Port for VRM UPDATE ONLY

After Update(s) have been completed notes worth mentioning:

After you final update is complete and the Audio unit reboots, and you verify everything updated and versions are correct, I'd suggest leaving the vehicle on for about another 10-15 min. You'll notice many of your apps will initially be unavailable.

After the audio unit does it's reboot, you'll notice on the bottom left corner, in smaller print, the audio unit will start installing all of your apps in the background. I, would suggest letting all of those complete so there's no issues in the future. The TSB doesn't mention anything about it, but as a precaution, I'd go ahead and let all of them install in one swing so your next drive is good and ready to go (y)

For anyone considering this read #4 & #5 well.. given we are doing this slightly blind make sure your ok accepting all the risks that come along with it.

Also, I've read on the ram forums if things go south (error 20) and such supposedly you should leave the USB stick inserted and keep the van powered on. The users there assert it does some sort of recovery/rollback. Keep in mind if it bricks totally I've found no documentation on how to recover from a full brick besides sending the radio to a repair place or taking it to a dealer. Hence again I say..please read #4&#5 and be prepared to accept responsibility and risk. I will say I did it and I'm successfully on 40.1. from 39.5.

I did an update (from 39.5) with these files on my 2018 Limited. Worked perfectly including nav. Now on 40.1 after having the OTA update fail 4 separate times.

I am glad it was succesful!
I can confirm I successfully completed these updates. Updating to 28.3 took about 18 minutes and updating to 40.1 took about 25 minutes.

I connected a battery charger and left the ignition in the RUN position the whole time (engine off). The van is programmed to automatically turn the ignition off after 60 minutes so be sure to cycle the ignition off/on between updates.

One thing I did notice that isn't mentioned in the TSB is that some apps aren't available immediately after completing the update. Things like viewing the owners manual are installed in the background after the update says it's completed and the radio reboots.

So far so good though. The navigation still works (not that I care because we never use it). I only noticed a slight change in the interface. How you chose your source on the left side of the home screen seems a little different than I remember, but I could be wrong. I hope this fixes some of the minor, odd issues we've been having with VR and making calls. Time will tell. :)

This is a key point i did forget to put in my OP. I'll make sure to add this detail. Thanks for the reminder!

Having now driven with 40.1 a few times I feel confident in reporting it fixes one of the biggest annoyances I had with 39.5, that about 90% of the time if you were listening to XM but had CarPlay in the foreground when the car restarts the "next favorite" button on the steering wheel wouldn't work until you changed the screen back to XM.

I feel like android auto is working better but might be a "seat of the pants thing". I wonder if there are any VRM updates we may need as well if we have rear entertainment.

One thing I will say is I had my van plugged in charging the whole time so if I remember correctly the van will charge the battery while being charged but mine was also full "on" (brake was pressed while starting). I didn't want to risk any mess up's since I don't have a full fledge battery charger but just a trickle.

I notice that too.

The Radio and "Media" menus used to be different "apps" or should i say... buttons on the menu. So you had a Radio AND Media, which has your USB, Theater, etc.

Now it's all combined in the "Media" section. You'll notice the Theater selection moved from the top left, to the right side of the radio. :)

I've been enjoying it so far. My WIFI finally works and connects. now I'm just debating to pay for it or not (probably will try it for a bit, we have Roku's for the rear screens and it'd be much more convenient to use car wifi than TMo HotSpot LoL

we used it for a vacation once and it was great till it stopped working. It just randomly stopped allowing any connections and you couldn't turn it off. The second time it happened the whole system froze and then turned black but wouldn't let you hard restart. I will say holding the power button for long enough seems to do a hard reset now(finally). Wonder if it will happen again..

I asked the around and got this on Canadian files
" I believe they are radio sales code specific, like UAV, UAS, UCM etc.... which by the system I search by, these radio sales codes can go with multiple models in the chrysler line up. I have yet to even see any difference between Canadian/US software. Only differences that I have seen has been the Latin America, North America and European softwares. Like for example my Ram radio is UCQ and that model radio is in the Ram, Jeeps, Chargers, Challengers and 300s...although randomly for the years available."

I should have kept quiet. Looks like I was just lucky first few drives, this is still an issue in 40.1. Seems so super specific but I run into it with my usage daily and it’s annoying. For some reason the channel up and down buttons work but not the next favorite button :(
Just to throw it out there.. if any Canadians do attempt this and succeed please post. Keep in mind the risks involved and that we have no idea if it will truly properly update a Canadian van.
Btw I've been running 40.1 for a few days now. Had no issues and everything is running great. Super happy I am for once up to date and was able to do it myself. I really wish Chrysler would just be kind enough to let us to it ourselves. Seriously..

Has anyone had a failed update? Curious what happens to the radio if the update fails. I'm assuming it's a bricked radio.

Depends on how it fails. The RAM forums say it usually ends with an "error 20" and you are to leave the USB stick inserted and wait. It will generally begin a rollback procedure that can "unbreak" itself. There was one user I read on there that had a catastrophic failure but it seemed like they applied the updates in the wrong order. You'll notice on the TSB it CLEARLY states if you're below X version DO NOT put 40.1 on first and you MUST put on the first update. They say that because certain things are updated in each update and if they aren't fully updated before the next one hits you'll be hosed. This happens on large computer systems as well. IBM is especially bad about it where each update has to be applied IN ORDER and rarely do they release roll-ups (at least back when they had system X servers and before they sold off to Lenovo).

It depends on how exactly it fails. If the radio's power source is suddenly cut off1 while an update is being flashed, it's probably bricked. If the radio is able to communicate to you that the update failed, it'll probably just rollback to the previous software and continue working fine.

After flashing the updates to our radio and going through the process myself, I suspect a lot of radios are bricked simply because the tech didn't follow the instructions in the TSB or take proper precautions to ensure the radio didn't turn off while an update was being flashed. All it would take is the ignition to be left in the OFF position and a front door to be opened or for the Auto-Off timer to expire during an update. I believe the TSB says to keep the engine running as a safeguard to prevent those things from happening. That seems wasteful to me because the updates take around 18-25 minutes each to complete. That's alot of unnecessary idle time.

I could be wrong and these radios could vary well be as fragile as advertised. I just have a very hard time believing that without seeing one fail firsthand. Computers are very matter-of-fact, black and white devices that always do what they're told provided an unforeseen hardware failure hasn't occurred.

I didn't have a USB update fail, but I did have the OTA update fail 4 separate times with Error 20. Each time it said it failed and then went through the process of rolling back to the previous version. I suspect the same thing would happen if the USB update fails presuming the car is left on and USB key left in.

Just an FYI we may have found the update doesn't work correctly on Canadian vans. It simply won't apply and is rejected basically immediately. So far we only know of one Canadian van owner who attempted and it gave them an "Invalid file" error before even trying to begin. So trying to figure out a workaround for that BTW..

The TSB states
"Before and after any single phase of update is MANDATORY to take a Vehicle Scan Report by
wiTECH. Scan reports can be requested during warranty claim assessment; failing to show
them can result in refusing to pay the warranty claim"
