Uconnect4 8.4" Software Updates v28.3 AND v40.1 AND VRM Update 2114.12

7331 Views 118 Replies 27 Participants Last post by  Tmccain4
To my fellow Chrysler Pacifica Owners,

I've attached the Files for North American, US/CN Chrysler Pacifica with Uconnect 4 8.4" screen require to fully update your Audio Units to the (at this time) current Software Version 40.1 Per Chrysler TSB: 08-076-23

They are organized into separate folders For US/CN (UAV/UCV); and VRM is separate.
Currently I have only the 40.1 Update for our Canadian Friends, when I get ahold of the 28.3 file, I will upload it and update this post

UPDATE

I've now ALSO included the VRM (Video Routing Module) Software Update Per TSB 08-018-21 REV A.
Please note: It is currently unknown if this update works for Canadian vehicles. If someone tries it and is successful, please let me know so that I can update the information accordingly.

UPDATE #2

At the bottom I've attached photos showing which ports to use for each Update thanks to @ThisSuckersElectrical for taking the time to take, mark and post these photos for everyone to use as a reference.

Please Follow the Instructions carefully when creating the USB Stick per the TSB.
I will also recommend, as with ALL software programming and Updating, regardless of what module on a vehicle...

1a) Ensure your vehicle battery is properly charged BEFORE attempting the updates,
or
1b)
hook up a battery charger of at least 10A, preferably 20A to ensure battery voltage is maintained.

2) >> I << set my key position to the 'Acc' position during updates instead of the 'Run' position, this allows the audio unit and USB ports to power up, but not wasting energy on the rest of the vehicle while updating.

3) the files being provided DO NOT include any MAP specific updates, that's a problem for you to sort, do NOT link MAP specific updates here please to keep this thread clean and specific to the actual SOFTWARE Update.

4a) Perform these updates at >> YOUR OWN RISK << As with ANY software update, things CAN happen. If you follow the instructions in the TSB, and have a battery charger hooked up (preferable option) you SHOULDN'T have any issues.

4b) As far as I know, these files are for US Market Pacifica's. I do no know, nor do I guarantee that these updates work on vehicle outside of the US market.
If you try it on a NON-US Market Pacifica, do so at YOUR OWN RISK.

5) If you feel uncomfortable performing these updates, DON'T. Go to your Dealer, if they are no help, try asking Chrysler Cares for Help. They have been FANTASTIC at helping multiple owners to have audio update issues resolved.

*

6a) SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING Specifically the VRM UPDATE: If you're like me, and had REALLY old VRM Firmware (mine was 17.xx) The update will automatically run TWICE, once to get you to 19.xx, and then run again to update to 2114.12.

6b) Do not unplug your USB stick until it's fully updated, and the units return to the 'HOME' screen. At first it will say updates completed, going to sleep. (it's actually rebooting) Then you'll see the Chrysler Splash screen, after a long first load you'll get to the home screen. THEN, you can remove the USB stick. (I'd probably suggest you double check software version under the setting menu through the REAR screens to verify first)

6c) The upgrade option will pop up on both screens, and it does not matter which screen you Start the process from, But note during the update, ONLY the left (driver's screen) will show progress. Passenger screen will not come back on until FINAL reboot when the Chrysler Splash screen comes up.

7) The VRM TSB has incomplete instructions to create the USB stick, but it is the same as the Uconnect update. Extract files to the base USB drive, not in a folder, and the USB stick MUST be FAT32 File format.

8) This is a suggestion, take it as you will.. I am not a fan of unplugging live modules... that's how you brick things.
My Procedure:

a) Turn on Vehicle completely (as tsb states)
b) Remove all dvd's, usbs, chargers, etc etc.
c) After rear screens fully booted up to the 'HOME' screen, Plug in usb into USB port next to BlueRay Player (per TSB)
d) Rear screens will pop up showing update, Click upgrade (again, doesn't matter which screen), and let it do it's thing.

Update Port for UCONNECT UPDATE ONLY

Update Port for VRM UPDATE ONLY

After Update(s) have been completed notes worth mentioning:

After you final update is complete and the Audio unit reboots, and you verify everything updated and versions are correct, I'd suggest leaving the vehicle on for about another 10-15 min. You'll notice many of your apps will initially be unavailable.

After the audio unit does it's reboot, you'll notice on the bottom left corner, in smaller print, the audio unit will start installing all of your apps in the background. I, would suggest letting all of those complete so there's no issues in the future. The TSB doesn't mention anything about it, but as a precaution, I'd go ahead and let all of them install in one swing so your next drive is good and ready to go (y)

My 2018 Touring L has similar info to what jdocop is showing, it sounds like there's a 7" UConnect? It only says "Dealer" instead of "Dealer Mode", the only option is "Radio Part Information" and the HW release# (CPU_J6ECO 4.0 (BOARD_PV)) or FW/SW versions (173418/00172600/00172600) are nothing like what the threads for the 8.4 UConnect are showing.
jdocop's version is newer than mine, but the questionable Chrysler update page says there are no updates for mine when I enter the VIN.
Thanks for at least figuring out there are different UConnect systems beyond just nav/non-nav.
Thank you OP!

here is my report back:

Canadian ‘19 Gas Limited + Theater pack

I applied the VRM succefully! It has some visual tweaks and interestingly new games etc!

The Uconnect software does not get applied and throws an error that is not compatible right away. Currently on 39.2. My Uconnect radio mainboard is a replacement though as the original radio went in to the dreaded boot cycle loop. I just opened it up and found the mainboard on eBay and replaced it. Everything works except for GPS and the vehicle modem which I don’t care anyway. Small price to pay to get back all the other functions! ($70 vs $1500!)
Hi

Your radio mainboard has unfortunately died! Your only solution is to either find a rebuilt unit somehow, order a new one from mopar or rebuild your existing one with a new mainboard.

Given how relatively easy to access it is, I managed to get lucky finding the right mainboard part from ebay and rebuilt my unit.

GPS and vehicle modem don’t work but I suspect a software update should get the GPS working but the modem is unlikely to work without specialized dealer tool to probably unbind and bind to VIN or some sort of effect.
Thank you OP!

I'm interested to know what new games you have

Super glad most of it worked out for you. Wish we could figure out the uconnect side of it. It's crazy that Chrysler has separate update packages for Canada vs US instead of one that just detects what version it's doing or something. Guess it makes sense in a few ways to cut down on the size of packages and such but still. Wish we could find Canada compatible updates since there are a few of you that need to update as well.

I'm still working to verify if the Canadian File is actually different, and if so, to get a copy of it for ya'll. :)

So I have a 2018 Pacifica with 39,000 mile bought it brand new. The radio tried to do a uconnect update and it failed. So now I get the dash going crazy like a failing battery. Nope batteries are good. Finally get it to the dealer and they said nothing to do with uconnect it was a transmission range sensor. They replaced that and still having issue. They said it's now the shifter.

It's crazy as it all started with this uconnect update, coincidental? Dunno.

Bet you will be replacing the batteries.

Tried to do the update from the links on the board or like dealer or ota? And I agree with the other user. You'll probably be replacing the 12v soon. When it gets weak squirrelly things happen. Like a human when they don't get enough oxygen to the brain..
Is there any way to determine the VRM software version other than with an OBD scanner?

Does Chrysler push the VRM update over the air, or does that have to be done manually? I have gotten 2 OTA updates in the last few months, but only up to 34.32. Curious if either of those could have touched the VRM.

Thanks

First question start van go to the back seat/screens and in the settings, I believe you can see the VRM version on each of the screens.

Second question No and they only gave us 1 update via the drive connect site. After that, it's been " go to the dealer". The OTAs (to my knowledge) are uconnect ONLY. The VRM update goes into a different USB port. Uconnect updates use the USB port where android auto/carplay work and vrm updates are the usb port to the right of the dvd/bluray player.

Should also say you have a touring L plus.. I didn't think that had rear entertainment?

Thanks. I will check it out.

We definitely have rear seat entertainment.
Thanks for all of this, I've definitely been having these issues too. For planning purposes, about how long does the total upgrade of both packages take?
Uconnect, about 22 min each update.
VRM about 15 min.

Hey all. I just bought a 2018 and am trying to update. My application version is USA-SBX-8.4-MR-28.4.0-20190625-M0G4. Update gets through about 25 minutes to QR40.1 before failing with Error Code 20. Any ideas?
I notice that too.

The Radio and "Media" menus used to be different "apps" or should i say... buttons on the menu. So you had a Radio AND Media, which has your USB, Theater, etc.

Now it's all combined in the "Media" section. You'll notice the Theater selection moved from the top left, to the right side of the radio. :)

I've been enjoying it so far. My WIFI finally works and connects. now I'm just debating to pay for it or not (probably will try it for a bit, we have Roku's for the rear screens and it'd be much more convenient to use car wifi than TMo HotSpot LoL
You have Wi-Fi? How?
Per the TSB Documentation, the latest 40.1 software update "fixes" the Wi-Fi connectivity issue for us. after performing the update, my "Wi-Fi" emblem is now 'blue' in color instead of white, showing connectivity, and even when i attempt to purchase the AT&T Wifi for the vehicle it shows it's available now. Haven't purchased it yet, but it used to tell me I couldn't purchase a data plan because m vehicle wasn't compatible and/or not connecting.
I have a 2020 35th Anniversary Limited Pacifica, gas.

Software version: 20.04.13
Application version: USA-SBX-8.4-JR-34.1.0-20200121-J0RM
BootMicro version: 19.49.01

  1. I have a FAT32 4GB Lexar thumb drive. Erased all files from it and extracted contents of UCONNECT_UAV_8.4_QR40.1_MY18-22.zip to root of thumb drive. Root of thumbdrive now has the 17 files from the ZIP on it.
  2. Made sure no USB ports had anything plugged into them, unless there's a hidden one somewhere I don't know about
  3. Started vehicle (to make sure battery didn't die or vehicle turn off during update, and I don't have a charger)
  4. Inserted thumb drive into front, non-DVD USB port
  5. Dialog popped up, saying there is a a new Uconnect version
  6. Clicked 'Update' button and waited about 2.5 minutes for it to reboot.
  7. It rebooted and started the install process
  8. After a minute or so, screen turned from dark background to white background and said Error Code 01, reverting to previous version
  9. Revert completed, and it rebooted
  10. After it rebooted, a dialog popped up, I think it said something about "incompatible" but it was almost instantaneously replaced by the "new Uconnect version" dialog from the earlier step (because the thumb drive was still plugged in) so I didn't get a chance to read it
  11. Canceled update and verified radio still working. It is still version 34.1.0

Anybody know what Error Code 01 means or how to resolve it? I've attempted to search the internet and the forums for it, but so far haven't found relevant matches.

I'm attempting to reformat the thumb drive and re-extract the zip to it. I wanted to check with the forum to see if anyone might have suggestions.

Thanks

The Uconnect update on your flash drive should look like this. All the files extracted should be in an unzipped folder.

The VRM update if you have the theater packge should look like this on your flash drive. It is the opposite, after the files are extracted they should NOT be in a folder.
