Oil filter change

I just changed the filter at 1400 miles and cut it open to see what kind of debris was in there. Not too bad, but you can see some speckles of aluminum as expected. But the oil is clean and the filter looks to be doing its job. I'll probably do it again in another 1500 miles. Super simple. 24mm socket and a rag to grab the filter. Nice and neat.

Wow.....So scary. Glad you are OK. I'd be furious.
Any update ? Has it happened again ? Can you put these in neutral and start it ?
It has not happened again, thankfully. The van cannot be started from neutral, it requires the tranny to be in park to turn on the engine. I'm hoping it was a one-time freak occurrence. I have to take it in to get a speaker replaced, so I will ask them to check for codes again just in case something popped up. I'll try to follow up again after that gets done.

Okay well glad to hear it hasn't come up again. Thanks for the update though
Hi. I'm new to this forum and have been reading all the posts re: oil change. I've purchased my oil (Amsoil 0-20) and filter (wix) and wanna change it but am concerned that i need the extractor i've been reading about to do so. If i don't have an extractor can i do a drain and fill the old fashioned way? (I mean to say, there is a drain plug at the bottom, isn't there??) Thanks for your collective help.

Hi Zeus. Welcome to the forum! Some people like using an oil extractor because it allows you to remove the old oil without getting under the car. But it's certainly not a requirement. There's a drain plug on the bottom, so you can drain the oil the old fashioned way if you'd prefer.

I will definitely look into an oil extractor since that sounds like the way to go for an oil change.

No extractor needed. I might have overstated my enthusiasm for the extractor. I've drained both ways now (using extractor and from the bottom). Either way, adding 5QTs took me to the same level on dipstick.
The van is low to the ground so you'll need a shallow oil drain pan. The 13mm drain plug is close to the front on the passenger side behind a small plastic door. Check its rubber seal for tears (mine had visible tears).

Oil filter is topside and you'll need a 24mm socket to remove the black plastic dome shaped filter cover. Your oil filter should come with a large o-ring that replaces one on the dome cover. Wet the o-ring with some of your clean oil when you install it.

After you add 5 quarts of oil per manual, wait a while then tell us where the oil level comes to on your dip stick please. Some forum members have reported needing to add more oil but a 5QT jug worked fine for mine.

The Pentastar engine is designed to make oil changes pretty easy.
Took my Touring L in for a oil change at 8,500 miles with 16% oil life showing. Had the tires rotated, and the front wheels balanced during the service. Supplied the oil and filter to my independent service station. After the oil was changed, I noticed that it took 6 quarts of oil for the change, as I brought in 2 two 5 quart containers of oil. My Pacifica was built in April or early May of 2016, and I wonder if the engine has a lager oil pan than later production.
...I noticed that it took 6 quarts of oil for the change....

Another 6 quart guy! Clearly there's something going on here but asking the service manager at my dealer about this is like asking one of the robots in WestWorld if he notices something funny about a picture!
Has anyone put a fumoto drain valve in? If so, which one? The pacifica isn't on the fumoto website yet.
I haven't pulled the cover over the drain plug yet so I'm not sure what kind of space is available.
Thanks,Jon
I've attached a picture with the oil "hatch" open. Lots of room to work in there so I would think a fumoto would fit.

I love Fumoto drain valves because you can hook a hose to them and drain to a container that isn't right under the vehicle.

I asked my Chrysler service manager about them and he told me to wait until my Pacifica is no longer under warranty. He said he uses Fomoto drain valves on his own cars too, just not while they are under engine warranty.

I'm not suggesting you shouldn't, just that you check first.

I emailed fumoto and they don't know which part will fit. Does anyone know the drain plug size? Fumoto will be able to confirm the correct part if they know the drain plug size.

I can't see this being a warranty issue unless the valve is improperly installed and leaks oil enough to cause trouble.
Thanks, Jon

Here's some pictures.

It's an M14 1.5 pitch bolt with o-ring.
Grade 4.8. 13mm hex socket head

Good luck. Let me know how the installation goes.

Regards,
Brett

The Pentastar upgrade 3.6L in the 2017 Pacifica is the same engine used in the 2016 Grand Cherokee. If that is listed with Fumoto, you could order that one.
Thanks for the replies on the fumoto. I gave fumoto the info from the OP and the matching part # is F106. I've ordered the valve but I'm not yet due for an oil change so it will be a while before I can confirm. I'll update when I have more info.

Thanks, Jon
Changed my oil and filter today at 1500 miles. put in a 5 qt. jug of Penzoil 0-20 synthethic.
Did not even bring the level to the bottom mark on the dip stick ?????? Thought these things used 5 qts. ?

Drained around 6 qts out from the factory fill.
I have the same problem.....before draining the oil from my Pacifica 2017, the oil level did not even show on the dipstick. I then drained the oil....it was 5 quarts. I filled the engine with 5-quarts and it did not touch the bottom of the dipstick. I added a 6th quart and now the oil level is registering on the dipstick and is 1/32 of an inch higher than the full mark. I told the dealership that either there is a problem with the oil pan or the Dipstick. They say they can not do anything about it. This is not right and I am not paying +- $50k for a car and then get this kind of deal. If they cannot solve this the minivan goes back to Chrysler!

Johan - 5 quarts takes mine precisely to the top of the hash area on my dipstick. Two oil changes... same result.

As you said it could be different oil pan geometry or different dipsticks or even dipstick tube length I suppose.

Since 6 quarts takes you slightly beyond the hash area and 5 quarts takes me to the top, would you be willing to measure or snap a picture of your dipstick next to a yardstick with hash area showing in the picture? I'll do the same. Maybe we can rule in/out dipstick at least.
