Very similar story here! 2018 Pacifica with 76,000 miles on it. Dealer thought head gasket, but the Chrysler inspector said the engine met the minimum warp tolerances to be replaced. (We have an extended warranty.) We have been happy with the dealer, but even they are having trouble getting communication on an ETA from Chrysler. This has been going on since 5/12/22, and I'm ready for some closure! Hope you all are getting answers!

I have a 4-year-old Pacifica brand new off the lot. Now has about 67,000 miles on it, of course, just past the manufacturer’s power train warranty. At the 4-year old mark almost on the nose, without any previous issues, the check engine light came on & the car was running “rough” while in idle. Garage identified “head gasket issue.” We brought it to the dealer & filed a claim with Chrysler in shock this could happen to a 4-year-old car. Dealer has had it for a month now & diagnosed “warped engine block” and “needs new catalytic converter due to warped engine block causing coolant to leak into engine cylinder.” Has this happened to anyone?? It was a brand new minivan purchased at a an authorized Chrysler dealership. I am told $10,000 worth of parts & labor work, with a month backlog on parts. I am lost and angry!!! Any suggestions??
I too have a 4 year old (2018) Chrysler Pacifica that started losing engine coolant. I had it pressure tested at 3 different garages. The 3rd garage was a Chrysler dealer. During that period on a few occastions my van began running rough when started. Check engine light came on and code was for "misfire cylinder 3". Mechanic put new coil pack in and code has since reappeared. Chrysler dealer charged me $120 and sent me out the door. Had independent garage look at van and has since took the heads off and plans on pressure testing the heads, planeing them if neccesary and putting on new head gasket. Estimated cost is between$2k and $2,500.

I have a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica with 47k miles on it. Initial issue that arose was a P0305 engine light warning, Cylinder 5 Misfire. Given the mileage, I opted to have a full tune up performed (Ignition Coils, Spark Plus, Plenum Gaskets) as I knew the factory items were still installed and figured if hardware was starting to fail for one cylinder, the others would likely follow suit. The check engine light originally went away for a period of time, but about a week later, after having a computer OS update performed (recommended by mechanic after tune-up as there was a recall) at the dealership, the car would no longer start. I will say that during that week I also noticed some rough idle at start-up that would then go away after roughly 10-20 seconds. Well after having the car towed to the dealership, the starter had to be replaced ($1150). Within two days of getting the car back, check engine light (P0305) was back on. Took it to the dealer again and after about a week, diagnosis was a warped head due to (likely) overheating. Initial estimate was $3.8k and I was floored. Very surprised by this as I have the car serviced every 5k-6k miles and had no warning lights/indicators of overheating occurrence. I am very fortunate as Chrylser is now going to repair the vehicle and only charge me $500. I guess because it's under warranty, but then I wonder why I am being charged anything at all, but I don't want to pull that thread to be honest. I just want a reliable vehicle and now I am concerned after reading through this forum that I may be in for a world of hurt in the future if I keep the vehicle. I am surprised as this engine is used in a multitude of other vehicles and I can't imagine all of them suffering from these reliability issues, but there certainly seems to be some common issues arising after reading through this forum.

My friends, I have been in this headache for over a year now. At the beginning of June 2022, my Pacifica had error code p303 come on, the same error code that came on less than a year ago in August 2021. Cyclinders misfiring and coolant intrusion both times. Last year, repairs were approved and head gasket replaced. This June when the error light came on again, I found the nearest shop to read the code and was so upset to hear the same code being read. There were 3 week waits at all dealerships around me. Both dealerships and the shop I was at said I would be fine to drive the car as long as the check engine light did not blink. I had camping plans that weekend hundreds of miles into the desert and did not feel comfortable with that risk. Instead, I parked the car in my garage, canceled my trip, and even decided to have the car towed at my own expense rather than drive it to the dealer. After it was determined a new engine was needed this time, the dealer informed me they were awaiting warranty approval. It took 3 weeks before learning coverage was denied. "Repairs were declined due to the failure to properly care for the vehicle / continued operation in an overheating state." The dealer appealed and thinks it should be fixed. The dealer who sold me a Pre-Certified vehicle appealed thinks it should be fixed. Yet here I am, having my lawyer send a letter to Stellantis. 3 months of summer with no car to drive my 4 kids. If you have a Pacifica and are getting cylinder misfire codes, drop it off at the nearest trade in lot and run.

Glad I found this thread. My 2018 Pacifica Touring L is at the dealership right now waiting for parts so they can install a new engine. It started with a solid CEL, rough idling, and a cylinder 3 misfire error code. The service department at the dealership tore the engine down and discovered a warped engine block. Fortunately, it's covered under the powertrain warranty, but once it's fixed I am wondering if it's time to punt on this vehicle. What other catastrophic failures do I have to look forward to? Will replacing the engine fix all the issues from the warped head or will other systems be affected and start to fail later on? Two years ago both batteries were corrupted and replaced (also under warranty) because of the ESS stop/start nonsense. I love this minivan, but these major problems are killing me. Can anyone who has had their engine replaced because of this warped head issue please let me know how their van is doing now? Thank you!

The Pentastar engine has these known issues that either grenade the engine prematurely or by the law of averages work out in your favor. Would think it would be unlikely to get hit twice by the same issue with two different engines but suppose it is possible since the root cause has yet to be diagnosed.

This one falls into the "Heartbreak" category. Sorry to say, it appears the engine coolant was allowed to fall below its normal level leaving the engine susceptible to overheating, and it continued to the point where the condition warped the cylinder head.

Many of us on this forum are auto enthusiasts. We check things all the time; tire pressure, tread depth, oil level, brake fluid level and color, coolant level, etc, etc. Along the way we might spot a leak somewhere and attend to it right away.

But there are others, many others, who don't have the time nor the interest in such matters. They may have learned that the oil needs to be changed every 10k miles (or whenever indicated on the dash), but the coolant doesn't need to be changed out for 100k miles, so no worries. After all, this is 2021 and cars are made so much better than they were 20 years ago.

Some dealerships used to offer "Care and Feeding of Your Vehicle" classes to new owners who fell into that second group. I attended one such session even though I thought I knew it all (I didn't; actually learned something!). It was a good way to learn how easy it is to take the few minutes a month it takes to check stuff before things go south.

To OP (spmatus), you could check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website for recalls and complaints related to your issue. I took a cursory glance, but was unable to find any similar complaints registered by other owners to the site (there were 246 engine complaints to comb through).

It is possible that the head gasket failed on its own (it happens) and that's why the coolant leaked to begin with, but at this point it may be impossible to prove. Obviously it would have been better if the low coolant level in the overflow tank was caught early before it caused engine damage.

My best advice would be to try negotiating with the dealer for a "goodwill" price on the repair, but to do so you will somehow (I know it's hard) need to lower your anger and frustration levels. If you love everything else about your Pacifica, let them know. I guess I'm just suggesting that you give them a chance to make the repair with the belief that you will end up as another satisfied customer. Or you could try finding an independent garage that can do a quality job at less cost.

And then, if you aren't already doing so, check the owner's manual to learn how to check your Pacifica and other vehicles each month to spot problems beforehand. Might save a lot of frustration down the road.

Good luck and all the best.

I know this is an old thread and I'm sure you've moved on and figured out your fix as this is definitely heartbreak story.. My '18 with 60k Miles runs perfect like the day it was new but seems to always use about a cup of coolant every 4-5k miles and there are no leaks anywhere. Seems a lot of different make Vehicles do the same exact thing at times just evaporation and Heat. If your coolant recovery bottle isn't checked often that might have ran too low which leads to slow overheating and imminent failure... :cautious:

Yes, we need to check our coolant level often.

It used to be that i would check the coolant level while checking the oil, but our two Pacificas hardly use any oil between changes, so now I check the oil level after first checking the coolant.

Absolutely.. Along with coolant A lot of cars including new even burn about a half a quart of oil between oil changes.. A lady neighbor of mine years ago hadn't lifted her Hood in 3 years and she said it runs fine it's such a great car!!!!..
Moral of the story, people that never lift their Hood will soon lift their wallet....😪

It is always good to check all fluid levels, but the cooling system is sealed and should not lose anything. No place for fluid to evaporate in a sealed system.

I totally agree it's a seal system entirely but my dad even had two Brands new different make cars and after 6 months I'll pop the hood and they're even a wee bit low even with mine, it must just evaporate out somewhere somehow extremely slow at times.... Going back to physics all liquids revert back to some kind of a nitrogen BS at one point or another, lol

Also keep in mind if the system is under pressure. I've seen it show low and removed the expansion tank cap to find it at normal levels.
Might need a pressure test if radiator has point hole leakage.

Yes that was my point but I see that many cars even new use a little coolant over time so I doubt they all would leak..

I was told that I needed a new head gasket. It was replaced, and I picked up my car 3 days ago. So far so good. Car started well and has been driving well.
Any update on how your car is performing with the new head gasket? Mine is leaking at 40K miles. Luckily still under the powertrain warranty. But I don't want to tempt fate if this is a short term fix.

Adding my story to this thread. 2017 Touring L, 62k miles. Started having issues and noticed low coolant back in August 22, but no diagnosis of head gasket issue until January 23. Talked to Chrysler on the phone and David said since I'm out of warranty I'm out of luck, but feeling increasingly frustrated by that since I wasn't out of warranty when the van began having issues in August. Messaged @ChryslerCares and hoping for some assistance. Also reported to NHTSA. Completely unbelievable that we'd have this much trouble this soon.

Not that I should be saying this to you your going through enough already and you have my sympathies but all this head gasket talk is really making me want to sell mine and be done with it and maybe these threads to on this topic, it's enough to depress you to the point everytime I start my car now I worry about some **** head gasket situation when I shouldn't be thinking about this at all .. I'm wondering what the real percentage is of these failures like 1 in 2-3000?? I'm really liking the Carnival I'll think I'll get that soon as much as I love the Pacifica, this is rediculous!!

This is what I have done already. Not willing to take the risk. My 2018 is at the age, but with less miles, about 43K. So a new Rav4 Hybrid I ordered in September of 2022 was in production last week, and expected delivery the middle of February. And starting about a month ago,I also got the issue with the GPS showing incorrect location. So, although I love the vehicle, it gives a chance to downsize a little and to get excellent MPG, around 40+ MPG, during these times with high gas prices.
