When to buy extended warranty?

They are for when factory warranty expires.
When I bought an extended warranty for my van it could be purchased during the first year of a new car purchase. The warranty was mainly for after the factory warranty expired 36 mo/36,000 mi (powertrain 60 mo/60,000), but there was rental car coverage for dealer maintenance and repairs from when the extra warranty was purchased. You really need to see what is covered under whatever warranty you consider purchasing. There is usually a maximum mileage or years. I've heard the lifetime warranty isn't available anymore.
