Got into 2017 hybrid van, started engine, multiple random error codes, couldn't shift into gear, couldn't turn van off. Called uconnect, they sent flatbed. Tow operator could not turn van off. He hauled the still running van, with the transmission and brakes locked, onto the flatbed and delivered to the dealer. After several hours the 12 volt battery discharged and the van stopped running.

After recharging battery, and clearing error codes, van operated normally. Dealer contacted the PHEV hybrid trouble team at FCA and learned this has happened before when the parking pawl had stuck in the open position, thus sending mixed signals that prevented the car from moving, or turning off because the car could not go into park. When the battery lost charge at the dealer after being towed, the pawl apparently became unstuck and the car operated normally. (If I had disconnected the the starting battery and waited a while before reconnecting I might have been able to drive to the dealer rather than being towed on a flatbed).

The dealer requested and received a new parking actuator which they installed. The PHEV unit is aware of similar problems in other cars. I now have a 1/2" wrench in the left rear compartment so I can disconnect the negative ground to try to re-boot the car if this happens again.

Were they ever able to find out the root cause of this issue? Same thing happened to my wife this morning and now our pachy is heading to the shop via a tow truck.

Hi granite,

I am terribly sorry to hear that you've had this negative experience. Please let us know if you are in need of an additional layer of assistance while your Pacifica Hybrid is in service.

Parking Pawl, Who Knows?

Granite,

I hope your car is fixed. It has been two weeks since my parking pawl actuator was replaced. No repeat of the complete imobilazation problem yet. My service rep. said replacing the parking pawl actuator was what the PHEV trouble team offered for this problem after experiencing similar problems. Who knows whether this is the ultimate solution, or whether it was a computer networking glitch in the car. By the way, my BMW neighbor had a similar problem in his gas car when everything locked up while driving.

To see what the Pacifica hybrid parking pawl looks like, go,to the Wayne State university video of a tear-down of the Pacifica Hybrid's electric motor. It shows the parking pawl at about 30 minutes in. By the way, the entire video is great for "gear heads. Video found at:

Parking error came on for me at 70mph on the highway. Luckily I was able to drift over five lanes to the shoulder. Waiting on a tow truck now. Couldn't turn the vehicle off for 20 mins. I hit the overhead lights and it let me turn the van off. Restarted and I drove to an exit. Still don't trust it to go another 30miles.

Same thing happened to us last Friday. PNRDL lights are all on. Can’t shift the gear and car won’t turn off.

Finally had to wait until the battery is completely dead and a wheel lifter had to come out because all of the wheels are locked.

I had the exact same problem last night, 2019 pacific hybrid. Had it towed to the dealer still running, but the battery started dying by the time they finally hauled it. They haven't gotten back to me yet to tell me the issue, hopefully it's a quick fix like yours with the actuator. How is this not a recall issue? My van has under 1000 miles!!

Did this get fixed. Our van is at the dealer for the third time with this issue. They said they couldn't repeat it the first two times because the battery died before they got it.
