2018 Pacifica Touring L Plus steering issues

Hello,
I am getting the exact same issue. (2018 model.) I had it at the dealership a month or to ago and they checked the electrical system to the power assist motor. Checked grounds and a recall which was done by them. All ok. The problem happened with the mechanic and I in the car but they said they have no answer. This problem started 9-12 months ago and is getting worse. It's going back to the shop Thursday 4/16 for other maintenance and they are going to look at it again.

What I did notice is a clunking noise when driving through say a grass lawn or bumpy road. It sounds like a bad tie rod end but they say they are 100% fine. You also can induce the clunk when sitting still and turning the steering wheel back and forth left to right. The shutter in the wheel DOES happen at slow speed say turning out of a parking place. The mechanic said the servo motor on the steering rack may need replaced which means the steering rack itself will need replaced. They are estimating 3-4K. Yes thousand. The van is 24 months old with 54K miles all highway. NOT ACCEPTABLE!

There is an issue with the design is my opinion. I am a trained aviation mechanic and there IS something mechanically wrong. I am beginning to feel it on the highway when slight bumps are encountered.

I did tell the shop I would wait for it to get worse and it has.

Chrysler cares please contact me so I can give you the dealership it is going to.

Ah that doesn’t bode well. I have noticed the same issues (ie: inducing the issue which stationary and hearing/feeling a clunking). Definitely feels like a loose tie rod but Tie rod ends don’t fail that soon typically.

I haven’t done anything yet about mine. I’m nervous about it sitting at the dealer for an extended period of time unless a fix is obvious and will be performed. Steering rack should be under warranty though?

Still seems ludicrous that it should fail so soon. I’m still suspicious about perhaps a misaligned or not properly calibrated torque sensor or something since it’s vibrating back and forth as though the computer can’t converge on the right steering assist input.

Hi db4elle,
Will keep you posted. Thanks for the reply. It's a design issue is my opinion. Perhaps the bushings in the servo assist assembly? Yes I should not have failed whatever it is.

Just an fyi the dealership waiting lobby is closed. Basically it is appointment only to drop the car off. You cannot stay on the premises.

The dealer replaced my steering rack which includes the power steering assist motor and the problem has not happened since the repair. The shutter felt in the steering wheel is gone. I do still hear a clunking noise when moving the wheel left and right when sitting still. Not sure what that is but the concerning shutter feeling when at low speed turning slightly is gone. Cost parts 1950.00 + 693.00 labor + 80.00 front end allignment. The car is 25 months old and 56K miles.

I assume this was covered by your warranty? Good to know the problem is solved for you. I will probably start going into the dealer soon to get this remedied as my warranty expires March 2021 I believe. Although my car only has 40k kilometers.

Nope. Not covered as it is beyond 36K miles. I personally did not pay but the company I work for did. It's a managed fleet vehicle. I would have flipped out if it was coming out of my pocket. Best of luck!
