Driving without the key fob - you can get stranded

I'm not a huge fan of this at all. I couldn't believe that if someone were to possibly car-jack me at some point, that they could just drive away with my vehicle without the key fob! I've not experimented to see just how far or how long I could drive without it. It just floors me that this is even possible at all. This seems like an extremely dumb move on Chrysler's part, and a serious security flaw.
So how far should the van be allowed to drive without the fob in the vehicle? What action should take place? Should the van simply shut down? What if your wife drops you off and then drives away without the fob and the engine is disabled just as she is pulling out into traffic? There are no easy answers, but I think the safest is the van does not shut off on its own.
