The chrome trim ring should pull up and it’s an accordion style closure . The problem is debris has lodged itself and you’re going to have to pop ring off , vacuum it and gently try to finesse it open and closed in a rocking motion .

I tried deep vacuum cleaning without much success. But was determined to open it this time. I systematically began pressing on each edges to see if anything can dislodge it. Finally figured out that something was blocking indeed at the tip and applied significant pressure until something cracked. The lid opened and I found that someone (likely my better half) had stuffed a CD (with original cover) into the console along with whatever stuff was inside it. It was lodged at an angle and one edge was abutting the lid at the point of latch. After I took it out, everything was working good. The CD cover was cracked at the end, but no apparent damage to console/lid. So it’s all good now. Thank you all for the helpful replies.

 

Update us if the deep cleaning fixed it.

 

To piggy back on this, a slightly similar but different issue. My son got a puzzle piece stuck behind the cover where it rolls in, so it won’t fully open. Is there any way to take it apart without busting it entirely?
