Just picked up my 2021 PacHy Touring L on Saturday and I have the same grinding sound. Only happens when battery is depleted and engine is running.

Would love to know if it's a problem.

Normal and as designed. You are hearing the sound of gears in motion while the vehicle is motionless and quite possibly with your head in the engine bay. It sounds so foreign to many because in an ICE you can never hear the transmission over road noise, unless there really IS a problem. Nor can you pop the hood and listen to the tranny engaged at mid level RPMs with a load on it.

Yes, the Si-EVT is not a transmission... But what you hear is gear mesh noise.

I just picked up my 2021 hybrid. My engine/motor is making the same sound as you described. Have you found out what the issues was?
I just got mine less than a week ago. I have the same engine sound problem. Only when battery is depleted and in P mode. Service said I may have to leave the vehicle so they can address. So sounds like they may know the issue? The noise is like a rattling noise against the hood of car. Doesn't sound very normal

let us know what you find from the dealer. did they listen to the sound? what did they expect to be the issue?

this noise is only present in Park gear.
I hear it with the car in Run and the transmission in Park, and the battery shows 0 miles range and the hybrid system is activated.

When the engine fires up to replenish the battery, I hear the noise. It's like a bunch of rocks in a dryer.

But I have also heard this in Drive. Not always, but I have.

unfortunately, it's plain as day with the hood closed and me sitting in the back seat of the van with all the doors and windows closed.

But what you hear is gear mesh noise.
I can sometimes hear it when driving down the road at 30mph and the hybrid system decides the gas engine needs to run.

But sometimes not.

I get what you're saying, but I can hear it AND feel it through the steering wheel and gas pedal (very slightly).

There were some earlier owners on this forum that described this sound. I have not heard anything like this in my 2018 or 2021. The other owners with this problem had the Si-EVT hybrid transaxle replaced to resolve this. Took a long time for them to get the replacement part to the dealer.

My van has 2000 miles on it right now, and will have 2700 on it by the time I get home this weekend. I have an appointment at the dealer Monday.

That being said, other than the noise happening occasionally it's been fine.

I am going to not plug the van in until the dealer sees it, so they can recreate it.

You can start the ICE anytime with a full charge when in run by popping the hood.

I do believe the gear train in the Si-EVT is noisy when running the Generator, but mine has sounded the same since delivery and unless it gets worse it seems to be an effect of the design. I presume the same noise is present when in motion and the ICE is running, but I don't hear it particularly over the engine noise.

I am not in a hurry to have the dealer do a major repair without since other indication this is getting worse or is mechanically unhealthy. The dealer is no way going to assemble as good as the line would.

hey.. did the dealership figure out what is up?

I've been having the same issue with my 2021 Pacifica Hybrid Pinnacle.. Dealer just said, " Hybrid motors make strange noises" and left it at that.

What's strange is the noise seems to go away when I lean on the side of the fender suggesting there is something loose somewhere. It's possible it's just cooincidence, but you can hear on the video how the noise comes and goes as I lean over to get closer to the source near the hybrid transmission area.

Never had this issue with my previous 2018.. As well I've noticed that this 2021 seems to have some play in a u-joint, CV joint or something else in the drivetrain as there is a noticeable "clunk" when going from reverse to drive or when transitioning from regeneration to drive. Again the dealer didn't think it was anything while my 2018 certainly didn't have this issue. At least I have an extended warranty ;).

@ChryslerCares Is this something I need to worry about?

Just got home from the dealer to show the wife her new ride. Everything was great until the car was sitting in the driveway in park with the battery depleted. Making the same noise as I hear in the videos in this thread.

Extremely unsettling noise. If this was a purely ICE vehicle it sounds just like loud rod knock, but worse. You hear it, feel it, and can't help but cringe.

Nothing like joining a forum on hour 1 of ownership due to a horrible noise in the engine. 😔

That sound is NOT normal. My 2018 never did that and my 2021 doesn't sound like that.

I joined just for similar issue. The rocks in a dryer is exactly the term I used. It has been to dealership 3 times and still have not fixed the issue. Had to fight loaner even though I bought the extended warranty.

Does not sound good.

If it really an issue it will fail while under warranty. I would take it in, get it on record the issue, then let it fail if it will, which I doubt it will.
