Oil level ?

I took our van in yesterday to an independent for an oil change (the nearest dealer is an hour away). When I picked it up, he said that they had to add 6 quarts to bring it up to the full level. I thought I remembered from the manual that it actually took 5 quarts but I didn't want to argue since I didn't have the manual with me and I don't carry around a desktop with me.
I figured that because they wouldn't have known how to force the engine to run, they couldn't accurately check the level. I went out this morning to force the engine to run but when I then checked the level, it was exactly on the full mark with the 6th quart.
I know running an engine overfull of oil is bad so if in fact it is overfull, I'll take it back to have them remove a quart. My question is if anyone else has run into this?

I'll go with the dipstick. The van is due for the battery recall in a couple of weeks and I'll talk to them then.

That leads me to wonder about what happens at a dealership. Do they just automatically put in 5 quarts without checking or do they put the 5 quarts in and then check?

Great. We're about to drive nearly 1100 miles on Monday and Tuesday with an overfilled engine and no way to do anything about it. I'd like to hear Chrysler's explanation of why the dipstick reads low when there are 5 quarts in the engine.

Update. The van is in for the isolator post recall (it passed) and I brought up the issue of how many quarts does it take for an oil change. The service advisor called FCA and the supposedly official word is that the manual is wrong and is being or has already been revised. It in fact does take 6 quarts.
It seems like that's a pretty fundamental screwup on FCA's part and who knows if the word has come down to the dealers.

Something just doesn't add up. Either some of us got the wrong dipstick somehow so that 5 quarts reads at the add mark or it really does take 6 quarts to fill it up meaning the owner's manual is wrong.

I just measured 24 7/8", not enough to make a difference. It's been a little over 5,000 miles since the oil change and the level is right at the full mark. The real test will be the next oil change which I will probably do myself so I know exactly what it takes to bring it to the full mark.

I though I'd reopen this to add some information. I had the dealer change the oil last week and notified them ahead of time that there could be an issue with the oil level and dipstick. I got the car back and the ticket said 6 quarts were installed. I just checked the level and it's about 1/3 quart above the full mark so it would appear that nothing has been cleared up. It has to go back anyway because it went in with a functioning charging schedule and came out without one after an assortment of updates.
