For the Sienna to win this round for me, it has to achieve a few things.
Make better innovation than Pacifica's stow n go / easy tilt seats, which should be much more comfortable.
Make better seats than Honda's sliding seats.
Figure out a way to implement 8 seats with the sunroof
Provide a Vacuum system.
Improve the ride, blandness and general unrefined nature to beat the two competitors and have aesthetically appealing exterior and dashboard.
I'd agree, especially as to No. 1 and No. 5. We had owned a Sienna for about 10 years and, although the ride was comfortable, it was very bland, "floaty," and generally numb in terms of handling. Of course, no one expects a van to handle like a sports car, but Honda, and now Chrysler, have both earned accolades for developing well handling chassis without compromising ride.

One item I'd add to the list is the interior layout, quality, and feel. In my opinion, that's where Toyota really struck out in its 2011 redesign, and Honda still struggles with this. Toyota has improved it a bit in the latest refresh, and maybe the 2018 Odyssey is an improvement over the last model -- I don't know (I've never been a fan of Honda's interiors). But Chrysler, in all of my biased opinion, really hit a home run with the interior on the Pacifica. Whether buyers react well to Honda's new interior and whatever Toyota comes up with will determine how well each of these models will sell.

Sorry for digging-up a month-old thread. I had just registered as we're looking at the Pacifica (and the '18 Odyssey) as our next family vehicles. We have four children (newborn, 2yo, 6yo, 8yo), and currently drive an MDX, whose lease is expiring in the summer. It's a polished SUV with AWD capability, and it's been serving us fairly well over the last two years. However, after the arrival of our last (and final) child, cargo capacity is very limited. I barely squeeze a stroller behind the third row, never mind anything else.

Many people in this thread cite Android Auto/Apple Car Play as a major deciding factor. While our MDX doesn't have that capability, our other car (VW GTI) does, and in my experience, I have never used it. We get our car music through XM radio (and on-occasion, use my phone to play music through Bluetooth connectivity). I have found the number of apps that work with Android Auto/Apple Car Play very limited. I suppose some would like the flexibility to use Google Maps for nav, but I personally use Waze. And since Waze is not (yet) Android Auto/Apple Car Play ready, it's just another example of the infancy stage the whole system is in.

With four kids, cargo space is a much larger determining factor. Honda Odyssey has much more cargo capacity behind 3rd row vs. Pacifica. I also prefer Honda's implementation of in-ceiling entertainment system, which allows 2nd and 3rd row occupants to enjoy a movie. Pacifica's seat-back screens restrict entertainment use to just two occupants, leaving kids in the 3rd row to play with themselves. I can already hear the arguments raging in the back :)

The panoramic sunroof on the Pacifica is just gorgeous, and I understand that's probably the reason they implemented the screens into the seat-backs.

Love the in-floor storage where the 2nd row seats fold into. In practice however, I don't see us using this function (ever). We have four car seats in place, so using this function would force me to remove those first. In the end, we just don't haul anything that large. I'd rather opt for the hitch receiver, and rent a trailer from Uhaul like I usually do, whenever we go Ikea shopping.

So from the seat-perspective, I prefer the new Odyssey's implementation of seats that slide sideways, and implement seat-belts into the seats. I think this is much more useful.

One of the major drawbacks of the Pacifica is really the small cargo space behind 3rd row, and entertainment screen implementation.

Another vehicle we're looking at is the Suburban with 2nd row captain's chairs. I consider SUVs safer in side-impact crashes, because the occupants are sitting considerably higher off the ground. I wouldn't want to know what getting T-boned in the Pacifica feels like :-(

Sadly, the Suburban really lacks finesse and tech, and the center console just feels VERY dated and cheap for what the vehicle costs.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Odyssey in-person when it hits the showrooms this spring. I think the in-ceiling camera that lets you spy on the kids is a bit gimmicky, as is the intercom system, but I can see how they'd come-in handy on certain occasions.

We'd be purchasing the top-of-the-line trim level, and safety tech there seems evenly matched.

Just sharing my thoughts guys, and sorry again for digging this up from a month ago. It's always useful to join these forums where you get a chance to exchange ideas and opinions on your next vehicle.

Hi there, where did you find the specs for the cargo space behind the 3rd row for the 2018 Odyssey? In my research I have found others to be listed as larger than the Pacifica and most of that time it is in height which in turn will give a larger volume number. I am curious to see what the numbers to maybe figure out if the odyssey is larger in depth, width or height (or all three) behind the 3rd row.

If you never fold the seats then stow and go isn't a buying option for you but you could use the stow and go locations as additional storage for items during a road trip etc. just a thought.

The cargo space behind the 3rd row is really small? I've been amazed at how much luggage and gear we've been able to fit back there. Is the Odyssey's trunk a lot bigger?

The current Ody has about 4 cubic feet more. So an extra carry on worth of space. Close enough for me no to be a deciding factor.

Yes the Odyssey has more over all volume because the Pacifica has a slightly higher load floor but the 4 additional cubic feet the Odyssey has in the rear most is made up in the Stow and Go wells behind the front seats, think of Pacifica as having 1 cargo area divided by 3 instead of just one large one like the Odyssey

I have never read the specs for the actual volume of the wells behind the 1st row in the the Pacifica anyone know?

I was referencing the rear cargo volume. And I just rechecked, its about a 5 CF difference. Still not big enough difference for me but it might be for others. 33 CF is still a big space! For example, a Honda Pilot has only 13 CF behind the third row.

Hey everyone,
I'm sorry for any confusion. I was comparing the cargo area behind third row of the current generation Odyssey, which is 38.4 cubic feet vs. 32.3 cubic feet of Pacifica. I am actually having a very hard time finding any dimensions/specs for Pacifica on the Chrysler website. It seems to have been omitted?

While I wasn't able to find any concrete dimensions on the 2018 Odyssey, it would seem that the cargo area behind 3rd row is as large (if not larger) than the current generation.

Again, not a major deciding factor, but with four kids, those extra 6+ cubic feet certainly don't hurt. Either way, it's certainly an improvement over our current 15.8 cubic feet behind third row in the MDX, which, quite frankly, is a joke.

rear entertainment

In regards to the comments with rear seat entertainment. This was a big concern of mine with our third child on the way which is going to force our 6 yr old to the third row. After driving and eventually purchasing a pacifica, I didn't find this to be as big of an issue as I thought. The two screens are large enough with a high resolution that you can see them from the third row. If you are in the center, your fine. If behind the passenger side second row, you can see the screen on the drivers seat no problem and vice versa if your in the third row on driver side. Only drawback I could see if if you didn't want to use the wireless headphones since there is not AUX jack in the third row for the rear entertainment.

I just want to echo what ammiller82 said above. We have five kids in a 7 seat limited, so a butt in every seat. We have one forward facing and one rear facing car seat in the middle row and the three older kids sit in the third row. Even with the rear facing car seat in the middle row, everyone in the third row can see a screen just fine. I sat in the back of one before we bought it to make sure they'd be able to see as described above. We've been on four 10+ hr long drives, and there hasn't been a single complaint from the back row about screen sight-lines.

that's awesome to hear! i have four kids and had the same issues. Did you have the second row headrests folded down? Do they fold down? I do not recall.

The one deal breaker for me on the Odyssey was the inability for the LCD screen to operate in silent mode. On their limited model (the only one with blind spot monitoring) it had two LCD screens. One for AC/radio, and the other for NAV. While you could disable the "beep" on the screen below, you could not for the NAV. So if you had to enter "123 anystreet lane" you would get 18 beeps! Move the joystick..beep...Touch the screen...beep...Made no sense, and it was annoying enough that we went with Pacifica Limited. Yes, the NAV system isn't the best, but it's quiet.
I wonder if they figured that one out with the new model.

That's great news. I'm happy to hear that. I have not yet seen the Pacifica in a showroom. I am waiting for the 2018 Odyssey to be available so that I can compare them side-by-side on the same day. I do absolutely love the sunroof on the Pacifica, and will gauge how much of a difference the 6 cubic feet of cargo room behind third row matter.

On a side-note, with regards to the Suburban, I was pleasantly surprised that Pacifica/Odyssey actually have a trunk roughly the same size as the Suburban. Behind third row, Suburban has 38 cubic feet of cargo (same as Odyssey). Looks can be deceiving I suppose. Suburban's cargo is longer and shorter in height, so its usability is higher. Still, the volume is practically the same. Surprisingly still, Suburban's third row is quite cramped, with very limited legroom. Both Pacifica and Odyssey have roughly 10 inches more legroom! Both Pacifica/Odyssey have substantially more cargo area with 3rd row and 2nd row seats folded down vs. Suburban, and I'm talking some 30+ cubic feet more.

After reading numerous accounts online of people wanting to drive a larger vehicle, Suburban, the leviathan of roads was always mentioned. It seems no one actually compared the measurements, because these two minivans easily beat it. Suburban gives the illusion of more room due to its very high ground clearance, nothing more.

Learn something new every day!

My wife had this concern so it's great to hear this works out.

I traded a Yukon XL (same as a Suburban) for a Pacifica Touring L Plus.

I am well aware of the space in the back of the Yukon.

The Pacifica is narrower and taller. The Yukon is wider and longer.

However the tailgate height of the Yukon is much, much higher than the Pacifica.

You have to lift everything up very high to get it in the back of the Yukon.

This can be very tiring especially with a big stroller or 2 strollers.

And with the 2nd and 3rd row seats folded down the Pacifica is huge inside.

The only thing the Yukon has that the Pacifica doesn't is higher ground clearance, 4x4 and better towing.
