Hi guys,

Thought I'd start a new thread with information specifically related to this modification instead of hogging the "what's new in this thread" thread.

I want to start off by saying thanks to @sethmeisterg. He got me thinking when he did his infotainment installation and he gave me some great info via messaging. In hopes of not having to retype all the posts, I've transferred all the info relating to this topic from that thread.

Your choices so far are go the infotainment route and purchase their upgrade or go the junk yard route and find a UAV screen and processor, buy them and then order the Fakra cable that I linked in this thread.
Feel free to mention me in this thread if you have a question and I'll get back to you.

As of today, I'm still waiting for the over the air update to go through that fixes the presets resetting and the phone book re downloading. Hopefully, it comes through or I'll be taking it in to the dealer in the next couple of weeks to see if they'll do a manual update. The only things I still can't get to work is the text and go feature, the phone app because it links the Uconnect to the now parted out donor vehicle, and the online manual. All the sirius XM features work including weather and traffic.

Thank you @irpilot and @sethmeisterg for laying the groundwork here. I ordered a kit from infotainment for my '17 hybrid. It arrived today. Mine came with a new screen, vents and head unit. Everything went in fine. It does seem strange to leave some things left disconnected behind the unit, but I guess that's the way it is. Everything in the car is working as expected, including my hybrid screens. I wasn't sure if they would work, but they are in there. Also, mine does not crash when I try to activate the guardian services. It even let me call and try to activate them, but they couldn't see my car information and could not proceed. I don't really need these services, but they seem like they are working in a limited way. I would like to receive OTA updates for the radio, but I'm not sure if they will come through or not.
@irpilot - I would love to know how you made the antenna cable fit into the new headunit. Do you have any pictures?

@smity84 I just centered up with the insert and pressed firmly and it went in. I think it probably pushed the little tabs out of the way as I applied pressure. Sorry o don't have any pictures. I'm curious to find out what software version you're on. Also, have you had any issues with your shortcuts on the bottom of the screen resetting from what you had set up? Also, of it let you call without the plug being installed then maybe it's not for the 3g module. Are you able to use the uconnect app to unlock and remote start your car? I was able to activate my services by calling them from the van but the activate services icon is still there...

Awesome! I wasn’t even sure which port to attempt, since there was a red one and a purple one that were free on the back of the radio. The unit allowed me to attempt to activate services by calling or entering an email. The call worked fine without connecting the orange cable. It connects the call and even says LTE in the corner of the radio. The representative on the phone told me that my vehicle wasn’t returning any information and that I would need to contact my dealer. The rep said that I could attempt an SOS call and see if they could see my location. When I click SOS from the radio, it tells me that a call cannot be completed and that I should dial 911 if it’s an emergency. When I try to activate by entering an email, it says that an email was sent and that the link will expire in 72 hours, but I haven’t received anything. The original Uconnect app subscription has expired so I can’t try that. I’m not even that interested in the services, but I want to receive OTA updates for the radio.

My software version is 17.50.59. I asked infotainment about upgrading and they weren’t very responsive, saying that it may cause issues if I update. I think they just don’t want to bother.

It’s funny that you mention the icons resetting on the bottom. I installed it on Friday and noticed that on Saturday they had reset. I’ll check it again today and report back. The only other thing that I’ve noticed is that I get an error from time to time as the unit is trying to connect to my phone via Bluetooth.

My uconnect did send out an email so not sure if that cable might be helping. So the icons resetting, the contacts downloading over and over again, and Bluetooth connection issues have all been fixed by a software update. You and I are both on the same software version unfortunately and it's the buggy one. I'm pretty sure the service department at the dealer can push the update just not sure if they'd actually do it if I asked since there's a mismatch between uconnect and the van. Ive recently reset my personal data from the settings menu and didn't pair any of our phones since we use Android Auto for phone calls and it seems like the icons resetting issue has subsided. I'll update if it comes back but that might be something to try.

I got one from a salvage yard to see if you can bypass the infotainment route.
What did the Salvage Route plus slow boat end up costing in comparison to infotainment? Do you have the part numbers to search for in the salvage units?

BTW y'all rock for figuring this out; it will be the next upgrade I do to the wifes van

It ended being about $300 after it was all said and done. The hard part is finding the parts. That website I linked seems to use a national database so it will increase your chances. The yard I used had a great return policy and seemed to have places all over the US. I found the part at one of their yards in Michigan and they shipped it to Houston. I was able to pay for everything over the phone and they told me I could bring it back for any reason to get a refund minus the shipping cost.

That’s great news and I see others in stock. Some how I missed your post where you linked to them but went back and I think found it. Did you end up using Part # YC12695 or the other one without NAV?
 
Very interesting thread, love to see that this is possible without dropping $1,000+.

Car-Part.com isn't a retailer. They are simply a nationwide database that combines the inventory of local salvage yards into one massive online database. It's one of the best resources ever conceived for the home mechanic...I've found rare parts on there that would have taken hours of phone calls in the past. Bookmark that site!

I used the one with nav. your call though. i never use the built in nav

@TinyRK look back to post 22 and you'll see some pics of the back of both units that sethmeister posted. He did a great job explaining what he used and didn't use.

Is the display the same for the 2017 and 2018?
Couldn’t see any difference just looking at pictures.

So you had a 2017 with Nav and XM, right?
And you still had to replace the display?

Looking at pictures from here, I ordered PN 68351931ah - the "receiver", which connects to the display.

And why did you have to order a new cable? The original FAKRA-cable didn't fit?

Yeah the 18 display is different. It's capacitive rather than resistive for multi touch. There is something in the existing cable that blocks anything displaying on the screen other than the backlight. That's why the cable is needed.

Not trying argue with the expert who's done this, but the screen on my 17 is almost certainly capacitive. I have gloves that are compatible with capacitive screens, but only on the index and thumb. And those are the only fingers that this screen responds to. My screen appears to be glass, and is not sensitive to pressure from anything other than a finger or those two fingers on my gloves.

I had a resistive screen on an aftermarket head unit in my other car, and it was a plastic face responded to pressure from anything. Perhaps they changed this during the model year? Mine was built in 4/17.

My Pacifica surprised me because the other uConnect 8.4 vehicles I've driven have a plastic screen with resistive touch input.

@TomB985. I'm by no means an expert. That's just what I had read on a different thread. Maybe they're both capacitive but only the 18 has multi touch?
 
I'm starting an attempt at the UAV drop in for a late model '17 Pacifica Limited, using a '18 head unit from the junk yard. The FAKRA cable mentioned in post #29 appears to be incorrectly described, it should be FAKRA HSD B "female" to "female" jack cable, not male. I went to search for this cable and then someone told me the Z connector should work, as it is a universal connector - so I'm getting it instead and see how it goes when it arrives.
